The Wii, or the Nintendo Wii, is a home game console released by Nintendo in 2006. As a seventh generation console, the Wii competed with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3. It's bid to compete against the other two consoles was by targeting a broader demographic, and with the its Wii Remote, a wireless game controller that can be used as a handheld pointing device which detects movement in 3D. With these features, the Wii led its generation over the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 in worldwide sales, with more than 101 million units sold within the first quarter of 2006 and in December 2009 broke sales records for a single month in the US.
