The consumer versions were first based on MS-DOS until the Windows NT kernel, originally designed for workstations and network servers, began being used for all of Microsoft's general purpose PCs. Windows 10, the latest in line, is thus the most popular PC operating system in the world. The Xbox One's operating system is also based on Windows.
